* The route to the summit of Avoriaz starts at Morzine Church and is an iconic route time-climbed officially for the first time during the 1975 Tour de France. The best time - 33 minutes - still belongs to Bernard Hinault. Every summer two Morzine-Avoriaz races are hosted by the Morzine- Avoriaz Vélo Club on 14 July and on the second Sunday in Augusat, there is  clocking-in and out machine is available all summer so you can time yourself. Cards  available from Morzine and Avoriaz tourist offices. The climb starts from Morzine church.

Alternative routes:
Alternative routes Take the Joux Verte road (from Montriond lake and then Les Lindarets) - picturesque, shaded and running through the forest  over 13km with an average climb of 6,7%, maximum 9%). It's well worth stopping off at Les Lindarets 'goat village'.

col de joux plane

Picture
he Joux Plane pass is the most famous climb in the area which always features as the last major climb of the stage and sometimes the Tour when the famous race around France comes to visit Morzine. Not only is it the most famous climb in the area but is one of the most difficult Alpine climbs in spite of its moderate distance. The start is very hard, then the climb is always difficult with a maximum average of 13%, at “la Combe Emeru” hamlet.

The magnificent panoramas of Mont Blanc should reward you with this hard climb!.

The usual way is to cycle to Taninges before heading to Samoens for the climb up to the Col de Joux Plane then descend into morzine

The Col de Ramaz will take your breath away in more ways than one! You can see Mont Blanc from the start of the climb and at the top the view is even better. The col was made famous by the famous breakaway sprint by Richard Virenque in the 2003 Tour de France (which secured him the yellow jersey and won him the Morzine stage too!).

You have to add to your must-do list.
